The Breath and Memory of Life
“The Breath and Memory of Life” - produced by New York Chinese Cultural Center The New York Chinese Cultural Center is proud to present an original production “The Breath and Memory of Life” showcasing Chinese dance, music, calligraphy and ink-brush painting to capture the essence and images of living during this unprecedented time of COVID-19. The first piece, “Nature’s Breath”, depicts wind as nature’s breath and how it is free flowing. However, people are unable to breathe freely behind their masks during this pandemic. It also symbolizes how people mask their true selves and we wonder what we will see when the masks are removed. The second piece, “Smother”, shows how our lives have changed during this pandemic and what we need to get through this challenging time. The last piece, “Spring in Memory”, reminds us of how everything comes back to life in the spring with the growth in nature and the celebration of Spring Festival in Chinese culture. But this past spring, our world paused and entered a long silence stunting the growth of humanity. Drawing from fond memories of past spring times, we look forward to the world coming back to life in unity as we heal together from this pandemic.
